Early Childhood Education
The Early Childhood Education Diploma program aligns with legislative commitments, provincial and Indigenous learning frameworks, and human rights agreements. The ECE cohort will engage in collective learning using classroom-based research and practicum to work with children, families and community. Practicum experience is a component of each term. By creating ethical and philosophical commitments, graduates can co-construct rich learning opportunities and become strong advocates for children and families.
Areas of learning include: Indigenous perspectives, living and learning well together, diversity, equity, and inclusion, creating pedagogical spaces with children, families and communities, educational theories and developing curriculum content, reflective practice, and program administration.
Practical experience is a component of each semester. With a combination of classroom learning and hands-on experience in early childhood care and education, graduates are able to work effectively with co-workers and children to create learning communities that are respectful, local and meaningful.
Inspiring learning and creativity
Graduates embark on rewarding careers in a variety of early learning settings.
Your course work in the Early Childhood Education Diploma will support you in becoming an early childhood educator who creates conditions for all children to flourish in ways that celebrate and honor difference and diversity. Learning environments mirror the collaborative, relational and reciprocal learning and practice ECE students and educators commit to in their work with young children, families, and colleagues.
TRU ECE graduates are respected and hired!
Early Childhood Educator Certification
Completion of the ECE diploma satisfies the requirements of the BC ECE Registry for certification as an Early Childhood Educator. This program does not qualify a person to teach in a public school kindergarten.
Please note: Beyond the required practicum hours, the ECE Registry requires 500 hours of work experience under the supervision of a Certified Early Childhood Educator to qualify for certification as an Early Childhood Educator. Many of these hours can be completed between semesters. For further information about certification requirements, visit the BC government website.
Educators are leaders and hopeful for a better future, without knowing the shape of that future. Educators are emboldened to disrupt the legacies of the past in order to activate transformative change for the future. In relationship with children, families, communities, materials and places, educators engage in intentional pedagogical work in response to the complexity of our current conditions. Early childhood education is a space to co-create new worlds with alternative narratives. ECE BC 2022, p.2
