2024 Program Updates and Highlights
NEW Bachelor of Engineering in Computer Engineering
- 5-year program with mandatory co-op
- This program provides a comprehensive and hands-on education that encompasses both hardware and software aspects of computer engineering. With a strong emphasis on practical experience, students can work on real-world projects, conduct research, and potentially collaborate with industry partners, preparing them for the challenges and opportunities.
- Program Admission Requirements:
- BC Grade 12 (or equivalent).
- BC English 12/English 12 First Peoples with a minimum of 73 percent (or equivalent).
- Pre-calculus 12 with a minimum of 67 percent (or equivalent).
- Chemistry 11 with a minimum of 67 percent (or equivalent).
- *Physics 11 with a minimum of 67 percent (or equivalent).
- *It is preferable to have Physics 12 or equivalent completed with 67 percent minimum (or equivalent).
- Our curriculum covers various topics: engineering design, digital systems design, computer architecture, programming, embedded systems and network engineering.

NEW TRU Wildfire
- We have recently established TRU Wildfire in partnership with the BC Wildfire Service as part of a dedicated wildfire training and education center here in Kamloops. TRU Wildfire will offer opportunities in research, education, training, and innovation.
- TRU Wildfire will be supported by world renowned faculty and wildfire experts. Currently, TRU is the only Canadian university with two research chair positions dedicated solely to wildfire science: Dr. Mike Flannigan, BC Innovation Research Chair in Predictive Services, Emergency Management and Fire Science and Dr. Jill Harvey, Canada Research Chair in Fire Ecology.
- We are currently developing curriculum that will offer broad educational opportunities and experiences in wildfire studies. Credentials will range from micro credentials, certificates, and diplomas to undergraduate and graduate degrees. Stay tuned for more information!

NEW Arts Cohort
- The Arts Cohort is an opportunity for 64 new-to-TRU Bachelor of Arts students to join a group of like-minded individuals to acclimatize to university life together.
- Students in the Arts Cohort will take three courses together each semester allowing them to build meaningful relationships in the first year. The courses are all designated “zero textbook costs” and are intentionally scheduled to allow students to ease into their studies.
- The Arts Cohort has 6 Faculty members and a Learning Strategist ready to assist students. Faculty and Staff are committed to helping students connect and achieve their goals.
- To join the Arts Cohort, students will need to first apply to the Bachelor of Arts. Once they are accepted, students will then be invited to apply to the Arts Cohort.

NEW Trades Programs Admission Requirements
- Several trades programs have had their admission requirements updated. Most foundation programs now require Grade 12 or equivalent, and an English 11 with a C and Math 11 with a C (or the course/grade equivalents). Math is any math, including Workplace Math. The following programs have been approved:
- Automotive Service Technician Foundation Certificate
- Carpenter, Residential Construction, Foundations Certificate
- Electrical Trades Foundation Certificate
- Power Engineering Technology Certificate
- Power Engineering Technology Diploma (2 Year)
- Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Certificate
- Welder Foundation Certificate
NEW Indigenous Education Centre
- Construction is underway for our new TRU Kamloops Indigenous Education Centre. The IEC will be a hub for cultural celebration, academic support, and community connection for Indigenous learners, faculty, and staff. We are so excited for this addition to our campus!
UPDATE Sustainability
- TRU is well on our way to being a truly ‘zero waste’ campus, diverting 95% of waste away from landfills by 2035. Recent accolades include:
- 2024 Recycling Council of BC’s Environmental Award in Public Sector
- Double platinum STARS rating for sustainability initiatives and achievements. TRU was the first in Canada and one of six in the world to have achieved double platinum.
- Construction will begin in fall 2024 for our Low Carbon District Energy System (LCDES) on the Kamloops campus which replace outdated natural gas boilers with sustainable electrical heating. This initiative will offset over 100,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions over the next 30 years, equivalent to planting a 4,000-acre forest.
REMINDER Open House
- Building off the success of last year’s Open House, this year’s event is Saturday, October 19 and is open to prospective students of all ages, community members, and anyone who would like to explore and experience TRU. Bigger and better than ever, guests will explore labs, get their hands dirty in science and trades, attend mock lectures and meet with students, faculty, and staff. Younger future TRU students can enjoy the Family Fun Zone from 10-2. This is a day you don’t want to miss.

Meet your Future Student Advisor
The TRU Future Students Advisors are the primary contacts for high school and community educators. They are each assigned unique regions and schools within BC and Canada.
Your advisor will support you with navigating TRU’s enrolment processes and will be your go to for those hard to find answers and questions.
If you haven’t already connected with your Advisor, there is no better time than now! Future Student Advisors will make your emails and calls a priority as we know you work hard to support your students moving onto post-secondary.
